I Lost My Daughter To Gun Violence. We Need Equitable Stop And Frisk

In 2014, thanks to drought conditions in California, the water level in Castaic Lake (northwest of Los Angeles) dropped to 151 feet...revealing what was previously hidden beneath the water.

On the dry lake, a local fisherman found a backpack. Inside the bag is a gun and a badge for a Bureau of Enforcement, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agent.

According to the unnamed ATF agent, back in 1992 he and his friend went out on the lake for a day of boating.

Instead of leaving their valuables in the jeep they brought with them, they decided to put everything - including the gun, sticks and other hard and sharp objects - in their backpacks and board.

Unfortunately, while they were out, the boat was flooded. The bag and its contents were washed up on the side of the boat, before it sank into the sea.

The ATF declined to say what disciplinary action it took against the ATF agent, if any, and whether the gun was reported missing under the law.

However, we do know that the agent was still working for the ATF when the bag was found.

In fact, in California, you must now report lost or stolen firearms. And there is a record of arms transfers, which means the government has a record of who owns the arms.

Now, I'm not a lawyer, but if the police come knocking on our doors and we offer "it was lost in an accident" to explain where a gun is, we should own it….

But if it's good enough for an ATF agent, it should be good enough for the average gun owner, right?

The meme actually pokes fun at this duality by pretending that the excuse will work for the average gun owner.

It is often used in the context of hiding the fact that you own a gun from the authorities, even if there is documentation that you own a gun.

But you'll also sometimes see it used when it comes to concealing a gun that isn't approved in the way required by law.

It seems to come up in a lot of discussions about gun laws – especially those related to confiscation, gun registration, gun transfer documents and similar concepts.

So in summary, the "I lost my gun in an accident" meme was rooted in a real, true incident, but has since been used to poke fun at gun laws and violent threats. .
