Taurus Gx4 Reliability - The Taurus may just be the most economical compact 9mm pistol on the market right now. The Taurus GX4 is the company's answer to pistols like the SIG P365, Springfield Hellcat and Ruger MAX-9. I sent the Taurus GX4 online a month before its official release to test the gun, carry it, and really see the value Taurus has put into this new pistol. So today I'm going to share my thoughts on a new carrier piece that I hope will give you a good idea if it's a viable option to add to your potential carrier rotation.
From what I can tell, Taurus is trying to break away from some of its old habits, which include shipping the pistol in a cardboard box. While I don't keep my pistols in their original condition, some people like to keep them around to organize things and carry their firearms long distances. Inside the GX4-like plastic case, there are two 11-round magazines, a larger optional insert, and the GX4 manual.

From the get-go, I found the GX4 to be a whole new beast compared to previous carry pistols like the GX4 and G3C. The pistol's design is completely different from previous Taurus pistols, even including a completely new trigger and no manual safety, and I'm glad Taurus went for it. Like most pistols these days, the GX4 has a front slide and slide-type grip design. The gun also has a built-in memory stick on both sides of the frame.

A feature from the G3C pistol to the GX4 is the pistol's cut-off front. As a result, the shotgun recoils more smoothly. The included sights consist of a steel white dot front sight and a black-trimmed rear sight. I wish Taurus had taken the opportunity to choose a 3-dot white sight, or even a tri-pole night sight, but they say the GX4 is compatible with later night sights.
After messing around with the gun for a few days before hitting the range, I couldn't wait to get a few rounds out of it. In my dry shooting experience, I found the new Taurus drivetrain designed for the GX4 to be absolutely phenomenal. It's not a racing trigger by any means, but it's by far one of the best small pistol triggers I've come across. Whatever Taurus does with the GX4 drivetrain, they should do with future assault-fired semi-automatic pistols.
There's very little grip for about a quarter of an inch, and then there's only a small, barely perceptible slide before the trigger comes to rest cleanly in a zero-touch transition. After the shot is fired, the trigger only drops eight to eight inches until it reaches the tactical recoil. When testing at home, I found that the drive weighs about 4 pounds.
I found the grip texture to be spot on. It wasn't overly aggressive, but it wasn't either. No signs of skin chafing or scratching while carrying it in my standard belly configuration, gas nitrided sliders hold sweat well, and daily loading/unloading with belly belt and LAG tactical hole.

I fed the GX4 a mixed diet of reconstituted ammonia along with a bag of ammo from my "mystery box". This mystery box is usually my leftover factory ammo boxes and some reloads that aren't common to me. The gun performed great with all ammo, and even after firing a few magazines of +P ammo, everything behaved as it should. I have magazines that won't fit Federal HST 147gr ammo in a full magazine, but they will fit a Mec-Gar 11 round GX4 magazine.
Taurus offers a 13-round magazine that comes with the GX4, and I'd love to try that range with the pistol. I have small hands, but I found that my little finger gripped the gun when I held it. I think the 13-round magazine has a bit of a small thumb, which I think is more beneficial for the accuracy of repeated shots.
I am very impressed with the Taurus GX4. This is where Taurus proves that just because a gun is cheap doesn't mean it's necessary
Everything from the new magazines to the vastly improved new trigger is a big plus in my book when it comes to this particular type of gun. I'd like to see if there wasn't an option to include factory night sights, an optical cutout (I think it was a month or two after the original release) and accessories. Railway.

Not everyone uses these items, but many of us do, and I know many people who install lights and optics on all of their pistols. Overall, I think the Taurus GX4 is a great addition to the secondary 9mm market, and unless you're looking for the extra features I mentioned above, it's the cheapest pistol on this list. For a long time, the Taurus had a Smith & Wesson revolver built for it.
